Back in the mists of time one of my teachers suggested playing a game of 4‑Dimensional Noughts & Crosses. He said it took longer and was more interesting than standard tic-tac-toe. He explained that players score points for three-in-a-row in any dimension and that the player with the most points when all squares were taken was the winner.
He also said it was important that nobody had access to the middle-middle-middle-middle square as it would give too much advantage.
We used to play using pencil and paper, and sometimes argue about the score because you had to work out how many rows of three were created when a new move was made.
Later in life I learned to code. Since I knew few people to play against, I decided to make my own game using a web server. It would keep track of the scores and also be an opponent.
By the end of 2015 I had a game that worked reasonably well and I put it into a space on a public web server. In 2020 I decided I would get the game its own domain name and the 4dtictactoe.me website was born.
